Metallic Glass Theme – WinterBoard Theme (No Comments)
Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard metallicblacktheme3 Metallic Glass Theme is a theme with transparent icons. Many of you know that I am always on the look-out for a new style of transparent icons (because you can change the wallpaper and feel like you have a whole new theme!). This theme contains a wallpaper, dock, sliders, 58 icons, loading screens, custom UI….etc.

I do have a few problems with this theme. The Message application doesn’t have an icon. There is an icon for SwirlyMMS so, you can always change it to your Message icon using ssh. And it doesn’t seem like the theme has the correct dock but, you can always use the transparent dock and it looks fine. You can get Metallic Glass Theme via the BigBoss source

How to Install

1. Your device must be jailbroken. (how?)
2. Make sure you have WinterBoard installed via Cydia.
2. Make sure you have the BigBoss source installed in Cydia.
3. Search for Metallic Glass Theme in Cydia, run the install.
4. Open WinterBoard and activate the Metallic Glass Theme.

Grazie Markus88!

SlideRules – Puzzle Game (No Comments)
Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

SlideRules Growing up, I used to love those little number puzzles that you’d get in “goody-bags” where you would try to position little plastic number pieces in the correct order on a plastic square. When I received the application SlideRules by AntHill Games, I initially thought that this game would be similar to those nostalgic games. After playing with the app, I learned that SlideRules actually offered more than just a one time opportunity to have fun.

Upon first loading the game, you are presented with a variety of games. The tutorial mode offers a nice way to get started. The instructions are housed in the game, so you don’t have to wait impatiently staring at a load screen. Practice mode gives you an opportunity to hone your skills based on the number of moves you choose. The real game begins with classic mode, and here you begin the task of advancing through numerous stages. The goal of each game is to complete a defined task such as getting all of the circled numbers to be even, odd, greater than, less than, or equal to a certain number. You accomplish this by sliding a row of numbers left/right/up/down. The game keeps track of the number of moves you use, and thus, the lower the better. Added challenges as you progress make the game increasingly difficult, and new options such as bombs, walls, and changing numbers make the game a bit more interesting. Survival mode calls for a certain number of challenges to be completed in a set amount of time.

SlideRules impressed with its simple design and execution. There were no problems with stability and the app doesn’t take up much space. Load time was a matter of seconds, and the game was very easy to learn. I always like it when tutorials are found within the game and not through an outside website. I also appreciated the changes that come as you progress in the game. The additional challenges make it so that you won’t be completing the game in a matter of minutes.

Unfortunately, I just never really got into this game. Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of puzzle games. My patience wears thin at times, but I do appreciate a good design and I feel I can spot a game that will be able to hook people and keep gamers engaged. Unfortunately, SlideRules is just not there yet. It tries with the additional quirks such as bombs, walls, plus/minus symbols. However, the core of the game just never really appealed to me, so I wasn’t as motivated to continue exploring what additional challenges awaited me.

At $1.99, there are far worse apps and games that you could purchase. However, based on my experience and lack of motivation when playing, I cannot enthusiastically recommend SlideRules for purchase just yet. It’s interesting that in the game’s description, the makers write “Are you bored easily?” and then follow up with how SlideRules is the game for you. Well, I’d beg to differ, and since there’s a free lite version, I’d suggest that you check this out before spending $2 only to find that SlideRules may add to your boredom instead of curing it.

Mac mini and Dropbox: Getting it done (No Comments)

Yesterday I wrote about my love of the Mac mini. So dependable and unobtrusive, it's the Honda Civic of computers. In the post, I briefly described how we use Dropbox to send routinely-updated Keynote files to the mini. A few of you wrote to ask for details, so I decided to share that information here on the blog. We use two pieces of software: Dropbox and iCal.

Dropbox

Here's the setup. First, the Mac mini is connected to the projector in the Projection Room above the theater via DVI. Every day, it runs a slideshow before the orientation film. That slideshow contains sponsorship information, museum news, etc.

It's updated once a week or so by someone in the art department (we'll call her "Janie"). Janie's desk is a couple hundred yards and two buildings away from the Projection Room. The Keynote file lives in a Dropbox folder that both Janie's PC and the mini can access. Of course, we don't want Janie editing the slideshow while it's running before a room full of guests. That's where iCal comes in.

iCal

We stop showing the film at 4:00 PM and Janie arrives for the day at 9:00 AM, so we set up two repeating iCal events.

The first event launches the slideshow in the morning. Every weekday at 8:45 AM (doors open at 9:00), there's a repeating iCal event with an alarm set to open the slideshow where it lives in Dropbox. Note that the show has been set to run at launch and loop indefinitely in Keynote.

What about updating? Easy. We stop running the slideshow at 4:00 PM and Janie leaves for the day at 5:00 PM. A second repeating iCal event has an alarm that runs the following super-simple Applescript:
Tell application "Keynote"
quit
End tell
The script does just what you expect -- it kills Keynote. This runs at 4:05 PM each weekday, and frees Janie to spend 10 or 15 minutes updating the file from her PC just before she goes home. The next morning, the first iCal event re-launches the slideshow and the cycle repeats.

That's how two free pieces of software (iCal and Dropbox) combine with an inexpensive, consumer level one to create a simple and effective solution to a problem. Best of all, it doesn't require a computer science degree or even a week with a giant manual. The iCal events and script are invisible to Janie. All she knows is, "I open the folder on my PC, change the slideshow, hit Save and I'm done." Sure, we could have dumped it on a central server, set up some sort of FTP voodoo that would have given Janie a headache, etc. But why? If the simple solution works, use it.

If you try something similar, let me know how it goes. Thanks to everyone who asked about this.
