Apple has today released Mac OS X 10.5.8 for client and server installs of Leopard.

The 10.5.8 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac, as well as specific fixes for:

- compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
- an issue that could cause some monitor resolutions to no longer appear in Displays System Preferences.
- issues that may affect Bluetooth reliability.

Let's face it, contact management is a pain. Address Book in OS X is a good tool, but one often overlooked feature is the "Smart Group" -- a way of quickly organizing your contacts together. If you're familiar with Smart Playlists in iTunes, it's the same but with contact info.

To start a Smart Group, go to File > New Smart Group. A dialog will drop down in Address Book for you to start entering criteria for filtering. For example, you could create a group of everyone whose birthday you have in your contacts by choosing the item Birthday from the first drop-down menu item, then adding the menu item "is set." Note that you can't create a list of people with birthdays in June, which is a bummer. But the Smart Groups have a variety of ways to filter, some more useful than others and several are dependent on the data (dates vs. text, for example).

To delete a group you'll have to make a trip to the menus, as no amount of right-clicking or key pressing will do it. Delete is in the Edit menu, under Delete Group.

One more thing: the notes field in Address Book extends the power of Smart Groups just a bit. After returning from WWDC I added the business cards of people I met and added the note "wwdc" to each one. I then made a Smart Group where the Note contains 'wwdc' and now I've got an easy way to see the group of people I met at WWDC. Think of the Notes field as a loose tag field, if you like.

I've also set up my Address Book to add family members based on a list of surnames, but that may only work if you have an oddball last name like mine!

Citing longer-than-expected development time for upgrading its Battle.net online multiplayer service, Blizzard says StarCraft II won't meet its 2009 release date. Instead, 2010 will be the year we make contact.

E’ in cirolazione un rumor secondo cui Apple stia per rilasciare un altro firmware correttivo per i nostri iDevices.

Un utente tedesco il quale ha riscontrato dei problemi con il caricamento di file video ed immagini su MobileMe ha contattato la chat di supporto di Apple, spiegando il fatto.

L’operatore ha risposto affermando che a Cupertino il problema è già conosciuto e verrà risolto con un aggiornamento software disponibile via iTunes.

Al momento non siamo assolutamente certi della realtà di queste informazioni, per cui sono da considerare delle semplici ipotesi.

Universal Search è una nuova applicazione disponibile sul Cydia Store che, una volta installata, diventerà parte integrante della funzione Spotlight, permettendovi di effettuare ricerche sia tra i contenuti dell’iPhone che sul web. L’applicazione costa $4.99 e di seguito trovate le caratteristiche principali.

Per utilizzare Universal Search non dovrete far altro che avviare Spotlight, digitare il nome di ciò che avete intenzione di ricercare e selezionare una delle nuove icone che compariranno nella parte bassa dello schermo per estendere la ricerca anche al web. Con Universal Search potrete:

• effettuare ricerche sui più famosi siti e motori di ricerca come Google (Images, Blogs, Stocks), Maps, Twitter, CNN, Ebay, Amazon, ESPN, flickr, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Dictionary;
• effettuare ricerche basate sulla vostra posizione;
• interagire con l’applicazione Mappe;
• ricercare per categoria;
• visualizzare i maggiori motori di ricerca nella versione ottimizzata per iPhone;
• effettuare chiamate verso i numeri presenti nei risultati della ricerca.

L’applicazione supporta iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPod Touch 2G e iPod Touch 1G.

Universal Search è disponibile nella categoria “Productivity ” di Cydia attraverso la repository di Ste Packaging al costo di $4.99.

Dopo i diversi annunci relativi di nuove versioni beta destinate agli sviluppatori, è stata rilasciata la versione finale dell’aggiornamento a Mac OS X 10.5.8. Considerando che Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6, è previsto per settembre, questa sarà con ogni probabilità l’ultima versione di Mac OS X Leopard.

L’aggiornamento, come sempre disponibile mediante Aggiornamento Software (165 Mb) e presto anche tramite download manuale (in versione standard e combo), è raccomandato da Apple a tutti gli utenti di Leopard.

Secondo quanto indicato da Apple, include correzioni generali del sistema operativo che ottimizzano la stabilità, compatibilità e sicurezza, ed anche correzioni specifiche per:

• problemi di compatibilità e affidabilità durante l’accesso a network AirPort
• un problema che potrebbe far sì che alcune risoluzioni monitor non appaiano più in Preferenze di Sistema Display
• problemi che possono influenzare l’affidabilità di Bluetooth
