Tempo di aggiornamenti per Apple. Dopo gli aggiornamenti di ieri, relativi a Safari e al supporto AirPort, è stato appena rilasciato un aggiornamento denominato Security Update 2009-004, per Mac OS X 10.4 e 10.5, che include importanti aggiornamenti di sicurezza.

L’aggiornamento ha dimensione variabile, a seconda della versione e dello stato del sistema, ed è disponibile, come di consueto, mediante Aggiornamento Software. Ulteriori informazioni sono disponibili nella pagina di supporto Apple.

Al termine dell’aggiornamento sarà chiesto di riavviare.

The Battle of Pirate Bay, è un giochino basato sullo stesso sistema di controllo di Harbor Master ma con lo scopo di difendere l’isolotto. Avremo tre navi a disposizione, ognuna con una grandezza, una velocità e delle caratteristiche diverse. Il gioco è stato recentemente aggiornato alla versione 1.2.0, aggiungendo diverse funzioni. Vediamole insieme:

• Nuove mappe tutte da sbloccare;
• Nuova classifica globale per supportare le nuove mappe aggiunte;
• Aggiunta una classifica locale;
• Aggiunte parti del giorno: mattino, pomeriggio e sera;
• Navi “minate” pronte per attaccarci;
• Risolti molti bug presenti riscontrati;
• Modificati gli aiuti per l’aumento della vita rendendoli migliori ed ancora più utili.

Apple released Security Update 2009-004 on Wednesday, fixing an issue in DNS software package BIND.

Delicious Library 2 has just issued a mandatory 2.2 update that all users must install if they want to actually scan in, update or look-up new items automatically. As of August 15, 2009, Amazon.com requires all applications that use its data and API to digitally sign information requests. This update complies with that requirement.

The Delicious Library iPhone app was pulled from the App Store last month because it violated Amazon's terms of service. This was a blow to many of us who like to manage or access their media collections on the go.

In addition to complying with the new Amazon.com policies, Delicious Library 2.2 fixes a few bugs (including the largest single source of crashes) and brings in Snow Leopard compatibility.

Delicious Library 2.2 is a free update for all 2.0 users. Delicious Library requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or higher. New licenses are $40US.

Yet another nav system for the iPhone has hit the market. The latest is called iGo My Way 2009 (iTunes link). It sells for US$79.99 and it probably the closest competitor to the recently released Navigon (iTunes link) which is $10 cheaper.

The software is a large, 970 MB download, but that means everything is on your phone, so it doesn't need to get data from the cellular system. I consider this a big plus. The cost of the system includes software updates and map updates until December, 2010.

I found a lot to like with the iGo software, with one big caveat so stick with me until the end of the review. From a feature standpoint, the iGo is quite complete. Unlike the competition I've reviewed, (AT&T Navigator, Navigon, G-Maps) the iGo lets you select from multiple voices, male and female. The voices are clear and understandable. While navigating to a destination, there is a soft 'gong' before a voice announcement, which helps me focus. iGo uses the Navteq database, which is also found on the Navigon. Like the Navigon, it does not use text to speech, so you will get "turn left in 100 feet" instead of 'turn left at Mission Street".

Address input is easy, but unlike the Navigon, it does not allow you to use your existing iPhone contacts. It does have auto complete, which makes the process pretty fast. The developers say contact input is coming in the next update.

The maps are easy to read. The display can be set to go to night view automatically, something Navigon lacks. The display, like all the nav apps I have tried, lags a bit behind real time, but not distressingly so. It's unlikely the iPhone hardware and nav software will ever run as fast as a dedicated GPS unit, but I think all the apps I've tried have been more than adequate to the task.

Mac OS X 10.6, AKA Snow Leopard, is one step closer to being released sometime in the next month. Multiple reports indicate that build 10A432 of the new OS has reached Golden Master status, which indicates that all testing has been completed to the satisfaction of the development team.

As we've noted before, Snow Leopard won't introduce many new features. Instead, it's intended to reduce the size of the OS and run much faster on Intel hardware. Snow Leopard will be the first version of Mac OS X that cannot be run on PPC Macs. Amazon.com is already taking pre-orders for Snow Leopard at US$29 for a single-user license or just US$49 for the five-license Family Pack.

The next step is to release the OS to manufacturing, so that the requisite millions of copies can be burned into DVDs prior to the actual release date. When will that actually happen? My personal guess is September 25th, as the last two versions of Mac OS X were released on a Friday (October 26, 2007 for Leopard and April 29, 2005 for Tiger). Of course, Apple could release Snow Leopard on September 15th to rain on Microsoft's release of the Zune HD.
